The Trouble With Trouble

November 24, 2010 at 7:06 pm (Household)

Trouble usually comes along once in a long while.  However, every now and again trouble comes along with friends.

With my gaming back (after getting the Kinect), we’ve been having connection problems with our DSL.  Well, in reality we’ve been having connection problems for a little while.  Finally got someone out to take a look and today discovered that there was an unused line in the house that was shorting out.

Oh, the receiver for the dish has to be replaced too.  Seems that the place where the HDMI plugs in is not working.  At least that’s what we diagnosed over the phone.  This means that I can’t watch Thanksgiving day football on High Def.  Sad that I’m hosting, too.

What I wonder is that if the spike from the short in the telephone wire caused my xbox to tank (I believe it was where the AV cable plugs into the 360) and caused the Dish receiver to fail as well.

No matter how it goes down, these last two weeks has taken out two major electronic pieces and has caused a lot of connection problems.  Trouble, like I said, sometimes brings friends.

Finishing the Deck

October 19, 2010 at 8:31 pm (Household)

During the three weeks that my in-laws were visiting, a deck was created.  Me, my dad and my father in-law spent about a week getting it put together just in time for it to rain for three days.  This meant that for the time being the deck was unstained.

Now the in-laws are gone, the weather is still on again off again, my dad had some surgery on his arm and I’m ready to finish this thing up.  The sprinkle of rain on Sunday is over and it’s suppose to rain again on Thursday so I made an effort to get as much stained as I could.  After it warmed up enough and the dew finally dried up (1pm) I went at it with a paintbrush.

Four hours later I had to stop since it was getting too late to do anything else (the sun was about to start setting).  Though I didn’t get it all finished, I did manage to get a lot of it done.  So tomorrow I’ll probably attempt to finish it off.  Will I be able to complete it?  I guess I won’t know until sometime tomorrow.

Working on the Yard

June 23, 2008 at 10:43 pm (Household)

So this weekend found me doing more to the yard than I really wanted to do.  Of course, mowing the yard is generally more than I really want to do… but hey, gotta take care of those responsibilities.

I had purchased some extra soil and grass seed last week, so I finally began doing some patch work.  This included me taking a shovel and turning over some soil and then adding some good stuff to the soil to help out with the grass seed.  Since I had the seed, I overseeded the rest of the lawn in hopes that things will start looking a little better than it has.

Puppies Update

May 6, 2008 at 7:46 pm (Household)

I haven’t given any updates on the puppies since that one hectic day several weeks ago.  Well, I’m going to remedy that and let  you know that they now have names (other than Eenie, Meenie, Miney and Moe).  From left to right in the picture below they are Gabe, Maggie, Tyson and Oscar.  Gabe is short for Gabriel, Maggie is a name the wife likes and it is the one we are keeping (as far as I know), Tyson is the little ba. . . errrrr the one that decided that my ear looked like it needed a hole in it so bit it (drawing blood), and Oscar is the big guy going to the sister in-law.  Whether or not Tyson and Oscar keep those names is still yet to be determined, but Oscar has really taken to the name and will actually come when called. . . it’s kinda neat.

Lots of time is being spent with these guys and a TON of pictures are being taken.  If you really REALLY want to check out pictures from birth to current day then head on over to HERE!  The wife and I have taken pictures every single day and there are a few in there of the dogs playing the 360.  :p

The Joys of Owning a Home

February 8, 2008 at 5:29 pm (Household)

Come Monday another house project is scheduled to begin.  That’s right – now that the siding is on and the doors are working it’s time to look at the roof.

After 15+ years, it’s time to replace things and get rid of that useless swamp cooler that’s sitting up there.  So Monday, the roofing guys will show up and take out the old stuff and cover up the swamp cooler hole (finally!) and put the new composite shingles that should last 30 years.  This time we’ll be getting something other than black so it should be a little cooler in the summer time.  White is going to be what we go with and with the yellow siding/white trim it should go pretty good.

All I can think about now is that I REALLY hope this is the last major project for a loooooooong time.   :p

Vinyl and Metal

August 14, 2007 at 10:23 pm (Household)

Today was a light day as far as gaming was concerned, but lots of things were going on in other areas of my life.  If you’ve kept up with me and my blogging, then you know that my home is now encased in vinyl siding.  What you don’t know (because I haven’t revealed it yet) is that the doors came in today and are now fully installed.

Yep, that’s right – my home is now encased in vinyl and metal.  :p  These doors are intimidating and for once they actually close all the way and are sealed to prevent water from getting into the inside.. which the previous doors failed to do.  Also notice there are no holes cut into the door to allow animal access.  Hopefully all of this will cut down on the gas and electric bills in terms of heating and cooling.

Now that this has all been taken care of, that’s one less worry.  Now to tackle work for a more stable schedule instead of a lot of improvising and trying to cover two shifts… or at least part of each shift.

It Has Begun

July 25, 2007 at 9:08 pm (Household)

The work of putting the siding on the house has begun.  The guys showed up today and they have started putting up the Weatherbeater insulation giving the house a distinctive pink look to it.  :p  They say that by Friday it will be completed so we only have to worry about stepping around the materials and workers for two more days.  The guy comes out to measure for the doors tomorrow as well and then a couple weeks will pass and the final portion will be done.

It will be nice once it’s all said and done and I can once again concentrate on other things. . . like games  :p  Speaking of which, I’ve hit a killer screen on Mutant Storm.  Level 87 is kicking my backside.  It’s driving me crazy to tell you the truth.  F.E.A.R. also did a number on me as well and I only made it to one checkpoint before walking into a mess I wasn’t prepared for.  :p  Sure, it might have had something to do with the fact the workers picked that point to show up, but it could have been because I didn’t take my time and decided to play catch with the grenade.

More House Improvements

July 20, 2007 at 9:02 pm (Household)

Today marks the day where I start getting anxious and hoping that my money situation is actually as good as I’ve had it planned.  The reason I’m saying this is because today we got an estimate on how much it would take to get vinyl siding for the house.  Yes, it is going to be very expensive, but the skirting of the home is already suffering as well as a few spots on the siding itself.  Luckily, no matter what happens, this is going to add curb appeal to the house meaning that if and when we sell, it will all help out in the end and we’ll more than likely see a good return.

Along with the siding, we’re getting our doors replaced as well since they don’t do well at keeping things out like rain (when the wind is right) and outside temperatures.  :p  The doors are actually kinda neat with their 20 gauge steel and custom built frame so it fits perfect (magnetic seal and everything).  It’s all energy star stuff so the energy bills should also see a slight decrease. Anyone who offers a guarantee like Sears means that this will be a quality product that will last a lifetime.  In fact, I believe that they said it was guaranteed as long as we own the home AND for as long as the next owners own it.

I’m not going to throw out any numbers, but it’s safe to say that it’s going to be tough on the pocketbook for awhile.  My plan is to take some before and after pictures.

Much Work Around the House

June 15, 2007 at 5:03 pm (Household)

For the past couple of days it’s been work, work, work.  Work at home, work at. . . well. . . work, and then work at home.  The only thing saving my sanity is that I still get an hour or so on the 360.  :p

Tomorrow will be more of the same, except I don’t have to go to work to do work.  I get to do all of my work at home!  Mowing, trying to get some stuff over to my parents’ house to be put in a garage sale, finishing up the patio furniture, cleaning.  Then around 11:00 at night, the company should arrive.

I had a mountain of trash out on the curb today for the waste disposal guys. . .  I always feel so guilty if I have more than the usual trash can.

Oh well, it’s back to work for me!  Gotta lot of information to gather and verify…

Working Outside

June 5, 2007 at 12:21 am (Household)

After a weary day of work and what have you, I’m finally able to blog about the weekend. . . which consisted mostly of working outside and going to Lowe’s for some stuff so I could do MORE outside.

Saturday was a lot of shopping and fixing the bird feeder. . .   It sounds kinda easy until you take into account that the shopping consisted of loading 49 16" pavers into the truck.  I was lucky – one of the guys at the store helped out.

Sunday came and found me with the weed eater in my hands and after that I walked around the yard…. with a lawnmower attached to my  hands.  I guess it went pretty smooth, but things really get hot after doing that.  I was able to get in a little break while I cooled down from the effort before I was unloading those pavers from the truck to the general vicinity where they would be.  That’s another thing I did on Saturday… cleared out the 10′ section in the yard that those pavers were going to live.  (For those doing the math, 49 pavers don’t quite make a 10′ square)   :p

The canopy (gazebo –  whatever you want to call it) came in so I really need to get those paver in so we can set it up.  It’s a portable one that folds up and fits in a little bag.  I suppose that means I need to get some patio furniture to fit in the shade.

Now we are. . . err.. I guess at this time I should say WERE in Monday and I was able to get 8 of them laid down.  It take time to get those things so they don’t move around on ya plus get them level with the paver next to it. . . I still don’t think they’re level, but I’ve been known to be a little "off" on just about everything I do    :p
